1st - 4th Grade
1st Grade
The primary grades at St. Joseph Catholic School aim to provide a comprehensive education for the students, encompassing all aspects of their development. The curriculum includes academic instruction in all fundamental subject areas. At St. Joseph, the phonics and language arts program utilized is Fundations. In mathematics, the focus in the early grades is on establishing a strong foundation in counting, number writing, sorting, and the recognition of basic shapes. As students progress to first grade, they build upon these foundational concepts to delve into more advanced topics such as place value, single- and double-digit addition/subtraction, measurement, and geometry.
Furthermore, the pupils engage in computer studies, library research, music appreciation, art classes, physical education, and religious instruction. By means of rigorous academic instruction and a focus on Christian principles, we offer a comprehensive education that nurtures the intellectual, physical, and spiritual development of our youthful scholars.
2nd-4th Grades
Language Arts
Classrooms for Grades 2 through 4 are self-contained, wherein students enhance their skills acquired in Kindergarten and First Grade. Our pedagogy emphasizes on reinforcing phonics and word study, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency to enable students to become more autonomous readers who read to learn. We impart knowledge on parts of speech and employ this knowledge to compose paragraphs with a central idea and corroborating details. Additionally, we hone our students’ listening and speaking skills.
Math, Science & Social Studies
Mathematics is a subject that builds upon previously acquired skills. In second grade, students acquire the ability to read and identify numbers up to 1,000. In third grade, they learn about place value up to 100,000, while fourth graders delve into even larger numbers. Second graders also develop greater fluency in basic arithmetic and learn to add and subtract 3-digit numbers. Third and fourth graders, on the other hand, explore the concepts of multiplication and division. Additionally, students are taught to measure using both the metric and U.S. Customary systems. The ability to comprehend and solve word problems is a skill that is emphasized throughout all grades.
It is also important to note that Social Studies and Science are integrated into our daily schedule throughout the week.
Religion and Sacramental Prep
Religion constitutes a significant component of the academic program. The sacrament of First Reconciliation is conferred upon students in the second grade, while the sacrament of First Eucharist is bestowed upon them in the third grade.
